Just yesterday HTC mysteriously decided to cut the price of its Vive VR headset by $100. And a new rumor from the company's home of Taiwan now sheds some light on why that may have happened. It turns out that a second generation Vive may be closer than we expected.
We've already heard that HTC is working on a Vive 2, but a Taipei-based Central News Agency report claims the new VR headset will in fact be unveiled at CES at the beginning of January. If this pans out, it means that we're mere days away from that official announcement.

The Vive 2 will reportedly be wireless, so perhaps HTC has learned something from that wireless upgrade kit for the original Vive, which we showed you last month. The new headset is said to sport two 4K screens, one for each eye, with a refresh rate of 120Hz (up from 90Hz on the current model). The Vive 2 won't however be standalone, so you'll still need a PC to use it. And not any PC, mind you - top of the line performance will be required to drive those displays.
